NOTICE: Ruby Outdoors is based in Western North Carolina in an area heavily impacted by Hurricane Helene. At this time, aquatics courses are paused until potable water is restored to Asheville or alternative aquatic facilities can be secured as hosts. Want to host a course? Email Ruby with inquiries.

Ruby Outdoors CAN schedule land-based classes for your organization at this time, especially if you have a host facility and students who need the course. If you are an aid or recovery organization looking to offer low-cost or free non-certification first aid skills courses, please be in touch to discuss your needs.

Lastly, at this time, Ruby Outdoors is at capacity for pre-camp lifeguarding courses in the southeast. If you are interested in taking an INSTRUCTOR course so you may offer your own courses at your camp, please email Ruby as she is working to schedule courses for February-May 2025 now.

P.S. The first priority class to get on the calendar once water is restored is Lifeguarding Instructor Recertification r.24 classes. If you need help finding one before January 2025, please be in touch for a referral to courses available on the east coast with other providers.

American Red Cross

Lifeguarding

The primary purpose of this course is to train lifeguards to act with speed and confidence in emergency situations both in and out of the water. Topics include water rescue skills, surveillance and recognition, first aid, breathing and cardiac emergencies, CPR, AED and more. The new program reflects the latest Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC) science. In-person and blended learning options available. All Lifeguarding classes include in-person skill verification.

Lifeguarding Instructor

The primary purpose of the American Red Cross Basic Lifeguarding Instructor Course is to train instructors to teach the basic-level American Red Cross Lifeguarding courses.

CPR/FIrst Aid/AED (r.21)

The primary purpose of this course is to help participants recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac, breathing and first aid emergencies. The courses in this program teach participants the knowledge and skills needed to give immediate care to an injured or ill person and to decide whether advanced medical care is needed. This program offers a choice of first aid, CPR and AED to meet the various training needs of a diverse audience. This is a community level certification. CPR for the Professional Rescuer is also available.

Wilderness & Remote First Aid

This program is designed to teach individuals how to deal with emergency situations by using first aid skills in a delayed-help environment.

Basic Life Support

The American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) provides participants with the knowledge and skills they need to assess, recognize and care for patients who are experiencing respiratory arrest, cardiac arrest, airway obstruction or opioid overdose. When a patient experiences a life-threatening emergency, healthcare providers need to act swiftly and promptly. The course emphasizes providing high-quality care and integrating psychomotor skills with critical thinking and problem solving to achieve the best possible patient outcomes.

babySitter’s Training

The primary purpose of the American Red Cross Babysitter’s Training is to provide youth who are planning to babysit with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and responsibly give care for children and infants. This training will help participants to develop a babysitting business, keep themselves and others safe, and help children behave, and learn about basic childcare and basic first aid. This training is designed for youths ages 11 to 15.

Leave No Trace

Leave No Trace Level 1*

The two-day Leave No Trace Trainer Course is a vital component of the national Leave No Trace program. It is a condensed version of the Master Educator Course and is designed for educators, guides, agency employees, other outdoor professionals and anyone interested in learning more about minimum impact skills and ethics. This course covers the Seven Principles of Leave No Trace as well as techniques for disseminating these low impact skills.

Leave No Trace Awareness Workshop

An Awareness Workshops is any formal Leave No Trace training that is one-day or less in length. These workshops can be tailored to educators, youth, college students, scouts, outdoor professionals or anyone with an interest in learning more about Leave No Trace skills and ethics. At the core of these trainings are the Seven Principles of Leave No Trace. However, the presented information can be easily adapted for specific audiences, environments or recreational needs.

Accreditation Process Courses

The Accreditation Process Workshop is specifically designed to help prepare people who are new to the accreditation process for their accreditation visits, and to serve as an introduction to the standards program for those interested in becoming accreditation visitors.

Accreditation Visitor Course

The ACA Associate Visitor Course provides training to individuals who wish to volunteer to conduct accreditation visits. Participants will learn the roles and responsibilities of a visitor, including legal implications of visitor actions; develop information-gathering skills; and learn to use resources available to make consistent compliance decisions.
